Initiatives & recent projects

  • Jaguares de la Selva Maya Program

The Jaguars of the Selva Maya Program was launched in 2017 with the goal of securing the long-term viability of jaguar (Panthera onca) populations and their habitat in southeastern Mexico through collaborative work with local communities. This initiative initially emerged from the partnership between Bioconciencia A.C. and Natura y Ecosistemas Mexicanos A.C. and is built on integrating science, education, and local capacity-building to promote harmonious coexistence between people and jaguars.

  • Tapires de la Sierra Project

The Central American tapir (Tapirus bairdii) is the largest terrestrial mammal in Mesoamerica and a keystone species for the health and regeneration of tropical forests. This herbivore plays a crucial role as a seed disperser, consuming a wide variety of fruits and plants. As it travels across extensive forest areas, it deposits seeds in new locations through its droppings. This process supports natural forest regeneration, maintains plant diversity, and contributes to the ecosystem’s structure. Acting as a “gardener of the forest,” the tapir helps preserve ecological balance and ensures the availability of resources for countless other species.

  • Soundscapes of Survival: Art and Science in the Conservation of Smilisca dentata

Smilisca dentata, known as the Highland Burrowing Treefrog, is an endangered species endemic to Mexico whose biology remains poorly understood. Its reproductive behavior is closely tied to the rainy season, and its calls are the primary means of detection, making acoustic monitoring a key tool for its conservation.

  • Climbing with Big Cats: Building Wildlife Corridors through Citizen Science and Sustainable Tourism in El Ocote

El Ocote Biological Corridor Project protects puma habitat in southwestern Aguascalientes by combining biodiversity conservation, sport climbing, and community-based ecotourism. Through camera trap monitoring, citizen science, and cultural heritage integration, the project fosters sustainable recreation, strengthens local stewardship, and promotes coexistence between people and wildlife.
